November 18th Sunday Sermon – Downtime is talk time (Pst Wilson Andai)

Psalm 5: Down time is talk time

Today I wish to share from Psalm 5 and just point out a few things that I learnt from it especially when going through low moments-your Down Time. Which could result from many things.

This phrase could mean different things in different industries:

  • Time when machine or computer is out of action: System failure-can’t perform primary function.
  • Time when production is stopped especially during set up or repairs,
  • An injured athlete,

Down time is part of what makes the human experience rich-the highs and the lows. If we dint experience the lows, then we wouldn’t appreciate the highs.

What leads to discouragement:

  • When expectations don’t align with reality
  • When we feel, we have failed at something?

Psalm 5:1-3: The psalm begins with the phrase “Listen to my words…” in modern English, the person is simply saying pay attention to me… and the request is being placed upon the LORD.

Is the psalmist alluding that God also suffers the common communication problems that we face as human beings: Selective attention, retention and perception?

Desperate plea: He is just emphasising his desperate situation, and hopes this conversation will change his life. He hopes that as he speaks God will listen to him and do something about his state.

But how is his speech described? “Consider my sighing” and verse two says “Pay attention to the sound of my cry”

From this we can say, he does not speak to God with strong words or in a loud voice. Sighing could be described as a low murmuring sound made in a time of intense sorrow.

This explains to us why he talks about the sound of his cry; he is in a season of intense sorrow. Which is part of life.

These phrases-listen to my words, consider my sighing and pay attention to the sound of my cry: point out the need of speaking to God

  • In desperate painful situations, that have broken our hearts to a point of tears. Don’t give up talking to God.
  • This is what you do when you have no strength, and the psalmist hopes that in this communication God will listen to him. This is priority at this point.

Someone wrote this statement: “When I am weak and need you, will you listen to me. When in a desperate situation that I don’t know how to get out from”

Does God listen to me when I am weak and I can’t even make strong prayers but only murmurs and cry’s?

Big question: Are you listening God?

Someone else said: How do I even know if God listens to my prayers? I have a lot of problems and I have asked God repeatedly to take them away, but nothing ever changes. Maybe God doesn’t care?

Friends the Bible says “Humble yourselves, therefore under the mighty hand of God, so that He may exalt you at the proper time, casting all your care on him, because he cares about you.” (1Peter 5:6-7).

Right attitude is Humility-right practice is cast your care on him

Your downtime is your talk time because God cares for you.

Allow me to draw your attention to Psalm 8:1-4 and talk about care

This is a creation Psalm and its focus is on earth and heaven, terms used to describe the whole of creation. The psalm talks about God and how his glory fills the whole of creation. This distinguishes God from creation (transcendent) but also shows that he is present (immanent) within it.

In verse 3-4 the vastness of creation is contrasted with the smallness and insignificance of man, and the big question is how is it that God would remember and look after-pay attention to and care for people?

This is perplexing in light of the difference between the size and scope of the cosmos and the relative puniness of humanity.

“What is man that you remember him, the son of man that you look after him” (Vs. 4).

Have you felt forgotten, not cared for or listened to by God? That is the lie of the enemy. God cares and you are significant and worth attention by him.

Going back to Psalm 5, the author calls God in vs. 2 “my king and my God, for I pray to you.”

The psalmist is indicating confidence in his dominion and his power to answer prayer. That is why even in his low moments he would rather spend time sighing or crying to God.

  • What is your situation? When is the last time you talked to God about it?
  • Have you lost confidence in him or are you full of faith and assurance of his power?

Despite his situation, he spoke to God in the morning (Vs. 3), and the verse indicates the phrase plead my case. This means to prepare words in a request for vindication.

Do you take time to prepare to plead your case before him?

My aim today is to tell you God cares and he listens-there is no formula of how to speak to him, whether you will cry, wail or murmur he will listen. Downtime is talk time-time to talk to God

In this season things to do

  1. Talk to God: Plead your case for vindication desperately
  2. Don’t lose confidence in God
  3. Invite others to pray for you
  4. Wait expectantly

Staying in the Saddle – Grace and Truth – Sunday 3rd June Sermon at #TrinityChapelMachakos

John 8:2-11
Have you ever tried playing the game of throwing up two balls one after another? When one is on the hand; the other is on the air. When you throw the second ball to the air, you hold the first.
I’m talking of two balls that God expects us to hold unto fully without letting one down to create room for the other
The law that was given to Moses/ Ten Commandments represents Truth
John 1:17 – for the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ (eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth)
Truth demands that sin be confronted. God never waters down the seriousness of our sin or the price Jesus had to pay for it. Throughout scripture, the moral standards laid out are uncompromising. A just and holy God cannot tolerate sin.
John 1:14 – and the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.
The church is struggling and is not able to hold onto grace and truth at the same time. We go after the grace ball only to drop the truth ball to make room for it.

Luke 9:28-36 Transition from law to full grace and truth
Luke 9:51-56
55. But He turned and rebuked them, [and said, “You do not know what kind of spirit you are of; 56. for the Son of Man did not come to destroy men’s lives, but to save them.”]
Grace is the gift of God by which he extends mercy, loving-kindness, and salvation to people.
The whole concept of Grace and Truth is a paradox to many
Grace-oriented Christians love forgiveness and freedom. They neglect biblical study and see moral standards as legalism. They’re strong on grace, weak on truth.
Truth-oriented Christians love studying Scripture and theology. But they’re quick to judge and slow to forgive. They are strong on truth, weak on grace.
Amazing Grace has been recorded more often, by more musicians, than any other song. When sung at the most secular event or pagan concert, a hush will fall on the audience. Eyes tear up, and not just the eyes of Christians.
Grace is what people long for, even and especially those who don’t know Jesus.
God expects of us all to be a church or people that are full of Grace and truth Just like Christ
We all believe that abortion is killing children – grace is you or us as a church serving coffee and holding an umbrella in a sunny day for someone waving a pro-abortion sign. Its a bit awkward! Yet because of the opportunity to share Christ’s grace, it is the right thing to do.
Attempts to soften the gospel by minimizing truth keep people from Jesus. Attempts to toughen the gospel by minimizing grace keep people from Jesus.
Grace and truth are both necessary, but neither is sufficient
Countless mistakes today in marriage, parenting, and ministry boil down to failures to balance grace and truth. Sometimes we neglect both. Often we choose one over the other.
To be Christ like is to be full of what He was full of: grace and truth.
Martin Luther said that the devil doesn’t care which side of the horse we fall off as long as we don’t stay in the saddle. We need to mount the horse with one foot in the stirrup of truth, the other in the stirrup of grace.
The world today is desperately hungry for grace and truth, because its hungry for Jesus.
Truth without grace breeds a self-righteous legalism.
We who are truth-oriented need to go out of our way to affirm grace. We who are grace-oriented need to go out of our way to affirm truth.
Hate the sin, but love the sinner. Truth hates sin. Grace loves sinners. Those full of grace and truth those full of Jesusdo both.
Back to our main text The lady they caught in adultery
Leviticus 20:10
“If a man commits adultery with his neighbor’s wife, both the man and the woman who have committed adultery must be put to death. (NLT)
Deuteronomy 22:22
“If a man is found lying with a woman married to a husband, then both of them shall die–the man that lay with the woman, and the woman; so you shall put away the evil from Israel. (NKJV)
They are saying, but the Law of Moses tells us.. That is Truth
5. “Now in the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women; what then do you say?” 6. they were saying this, testing Him, so that they might have grounds for accusing Him. But Jesus stooped down and with His finger wrote on the ground.
One of the things that we know that God wrote in His finger is the Ten Commandments, Ex. 31:18. The law was written in stone (uncompromising), Jesus wrote in sand (removable)
May be you are here, and you are a sinner and feel separated from God Jesus wrote on the sand
Jesus said to a woman caught in adultery, I don’t condemn you, now leave your life of sin. Translated: You’re a sinner. What you did is a sin. It was wrong. But I don’t condemn you. I’m not going to give you what you deserve. I’m extending to you exactly what you don’t deserve: grace.
Jesus didn’t try to balance grace and truth. He didn’t water down the law. He didn’t put a condition on grace. He gave her a full dose of both.
Imagine with me if you would, a church that gets as clear and as close a look as we will ever get of what grace and truth look like in an otherwise graceless world that has turned its back on truth.
In Jesus, there was no conflict between grace and truth. Its that artificial conflict that sends churches toward unhealthy as well as unhelpful extremes.
It is our misunderstanding of the grace Jesus modeled and taught that leaves us feeling as if grace allows people to get by with things.
Romans 5:20
The Law came in so that the transgression would increase; but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more.

Romans 6:1-2
What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin so that grace may increase? May it never be! How shall we who died to sin still live in it?
Jude 1:4
For certain men whose condemnation was written about long ago have secretly slipped in among you. They are godless men, who change the grace of our God into a license for immorality and deny Jesus Christ our only sovereign and Lord. (NIV)
Grace doesn’t dumb down sin to make it more palatable. The purpose of truth isn’t to isolate people from God or from his people.
We need to know the same God who is Gracious has also another side that punishes sin

SERMON SERIES: The #RunningMan  – Gods Ridiculous Mercy to a People Undeserving (Pst Hellen)

Last week summary:

JONAH CHAPTER 1
EMPHASIS ON REBELLION: The Gospel group Casting Crowns puts it this way; Its a slow fade, when you give yourself away, its a slow fade, when black and white turns to grey and thoughts invade, choices are made, a price will be paid when you give yourself away. People never crumble in a day, daddies never crumble in a day, families never crumble in a day, its always a slow fade. The waves of disobedience to God and his call happens in small subtle waves and before we realize it, we are in the sea of spiritual slumber
Adultery at 40 begins with pornography at 20, grand corruption at a national level begins with bribing cops kidogo tu, alcoholism at 35 starts with illegal drinking at 16, the arrogant, unyielding man or woman who never listens to anyone at 60 begins with avoiding and dismissing spiritual accountability and authority in our lives at 30 and being indifferent to the cries of our city which is in spiritual slavery to sin, Satan and the grave starts with refusing to engage in evangelism with our classmates, workmates, neighbours and family.
CS: Jonahs rebellion is obvious, but such kind of rebellion has devastating repercussions.
THE REPERCUSSIONS

STATE: Our rebellion against God always carries with it Repercussions from God
THE DOWNWARD SPIRAL

He went down to Joppa to board a ship to go to Tarshish. He paid his fare as well.

Ezekiel clearly pointed out last week that God doesnt fund rebellion

He went below the deck where he lay down and slept

He preferred travelling 4023km versus 804km.

Youd prefer wounds of unforgiveness and bitterness rather than Gods peace and grace to move on
AWAKENED DISTURBANCES

The Lord sent a great wind on the sea, and a violent storm arose that the ship threatened to break up. Rebellion arouses ferocious storms, and battles around our lives.

This proves Gods sovereignity whos smarter now moment. “But then I will win her back once again. I will lead her into the desert and speak tenderly to her there. Hosea 2;14. God never intends to do away with us. He loves unconditionally
DEAD CONSCIENCE

Asleep while there are storms: literally awakening everyone to do something

Asleep when people are praying to their gods

Vs 9 He says he is a Hebrew and fears the God of heaven, who made see n land (this explains how puffed up he was in the fact of him being a Hebrew and prophet yet okay with his disobedience. Maybe he was simply religious.
DESPAIR TO PEOPLE AROUND US

Vs 5 the sailors were afraid and each cried out to his own god because they had lost control of the ship

Vs 5 loss of cargo to lighten the ship

Nb when we can’t hear and follow Gods instruction because of a dead conscience he affects people around us to arouse us to repentance

Vs 10 terrified when the lot falls on Jonah 243 times and they discover he is a Hebrew and has run away from God. Proverbs 16:33 We may throw the dice, but the LORD determines how they fall.
His sin was in private but it open doors for the poor sailors to come face to face with death.
Hands down, the best thing I can do, the best thing we can do for those we love is walk closely with the Lord! The greatest gift we can give to those we love is to walk closely with the Lord.
ILLUSTRATE: training on First Aid, drowning for example, 70kg (me), 90 kg (him), passed out. Im no good to my friend when Im passed out. In the same way, we are of no spiritual good to our families, church and nation when were spiritually passed out.

Our kids are growing up to be selfish, self-centred and greedy because we are selfish, self-centred and greedy. Them; clothes and phones, us; cars and houses

God is not a priority for us, so Hes not a priority for our children, they will not believe in Him as Lord and Saviour because Hes not real in our lives.

Our churches are rife with the most ugly forms of tribalism and the rest of Kenya picks its cue from us and continues in their tribalist ways now justified and rubber stamped by the church of Kenya, they go about their merry tribalist, people-hating, culture-demeaning ways because we the church (not just the clergy) have sanctioned it. Our disobedience to the great command to love our neighbor as we love ourselves, to love other ethnic communities as we love our own ethnic community if killing Kenya.
CS: Greatest gift we can give those we love, is to walk closely with the Lord. Jonah rebelled against God and as a result of his disobedience, others were adversely affected. The effects of his sin continue (Read Jonah 1:11-12)
At face value  it LOOKS like Jonah is doing the noble thing. It looks as though Jonah has recognized the error of his ways and is remorseful because he has brought Gods wrath upon these poor mariners, so in order to save them, he should be thrown over, Jonah is doing this because its the noble thing to do right?…WRONG! Remember guys, Jonah is dodgy! Jonah couldnt care less about these mariners, hes a tribalist who considers every non-Jew a 2nd class human, he could care less what happens to these pagan sailors. The only reason Jonah wants to be thrown over-board is coz at least this way, he will die and he wont have to go to Nineveh! There are no noble intentions in this statement. But remember, Jonah is not the main character in this book, GOD is! God is fully in control of the sea (read Jonah 1:4) and it is God who sent this storm on the sea. So why did God send a storm Jonahs way? For the same reason God sends storms your way and my way.
God sends storms to our lives to get our attention and humble us. We are naturally inclined to rely on ourselves and the arrogance of our hearts wants to live without God. You see there are;
2 things that will humble us;

Our knowledge of God; Because we know who God is, live in reverent fear of Him, we would humble ourselves in the sight of/ in view of who this majestic King is. Buuut most of us (and I put myself first on that list) have hard heads and hearts of stone like Jonah, so every once in a while,

God will send a storm of affliction to get our attention and humble us;

Slaves to Money? God will attack it and make sure we go through seasons of financial difficulty, just so that we come back to Him and say I need You O God, more than I need money.

Slave to Peoples Approval? God will put us in situations where we have to disappoint people so that the only approval we desire is His

Obsessed with success? God will mercifully make sure we fail, so that our definition of success is to know Him and make Him known

Self-centred? God will ensure that your marriage goes through extreme difficulty, until you and I realize that the problem in our marriage is the person looking back at us in the mirror and we cry; God fix me, I cant do this without you!
NOW I WANT TO BE CAREFUL HERE: NOT ALL AFFLICTION  sometimes it has nothing to do with our disobedience, sometimes its just part of Gods growth plan for us to make us into more mature believers.
Now we can either submit to the storm or fight the storm. The more you try to fight, the more you end up like Jonah fighting an omnipotent God! I guarantee you on the authority of Scripture that in the history of humanity there has never been, nor will there ever be anyone who ever fought God and won. So if youre resisting the storm all your doing is extending your suffering. But if you submit to the storm and say yes, Lord help me, change me, mould me through this storm, it will be of earthly and eternal benefit to you.
God sovereignly allows storms to break the legs of our self-reliance. He allows storms to put us flat on our backs so that were facing the right direction, up! Looking to Him and depending on Him..
CS: Jonah has rebelled against God and has suffered the repercussions of his rebellion, but a merciful God is about to rescue both the rebellious prophet and the rebellious pagans.

October sermon series:THE RUNNING MAN (PST Ezekiel Nguli)

SERMON SERIES: THE RUNNING MAN  A study through the book of Jonah – Gods Ridiculous Mercy to a People Undeserving
SUB TOPIC: I AM JONAH

Dear friends:

A mother was driving to school one day, and her youngest child was standing in the seat beside her.  Realizing the danger, she said to him, “Sit down, dear, I may have to stop suddenly and you’ll be thrown against the windshield.”

“No!” the little boy refused.

“Please sit down, dear, I don’t want you to get hurt,” the mother insisted.

“No!” came the stubborn reply.

Finally, she reached over and pulled him down.  He sat there sullenly for a moment, then said, “I may be sitting down on the outside, but I’m standing up on the inside.”
How often we respond to authority that way.  We submit to it on the outside, but inside we’re saying, “I resent it.”

Or, outwardly, to other people, we may appear to be complying with God’s commandments and living a holy life, but inwardly we are imagining or planning evil. That was Jonah  and today we are saying  I am Jonah

INTRODUCTION:

Word association; Sesame? Michael? David andBathsheba, Al Green, Gore, Al-cohol, Jonah..
CONTEXT:

Jonah the son of Amittai  who is this Jonah the son of Amittai? Jonah the son of Amittai first shows up in 2 Kings 14:23-27 (read). The basic idea is that the Israelites were being besieged by a powerful army from the North called the Assyrians, and the LORD used Jonah to prophesy to King Jeroboam II (a show of Gods mercy coz Scripture clearly says that Jeroboam was a wicked king). Jonahs prophecy led to the protection of their northern border and decisively protected them against the Assyrians, providing them victory and security within their ancient borders. Now, this made Jonah a national hero! He was praised, loved and heralded as the guy who saved Israel from certain destruction at the hand of the powerful Assyrians.
His name  Jonah means dove and son of Amittai means son of faithfulness/truthfulness.

Jews used to name their kids like Africans, they usually named their children in line with what they hoped or prayed their child would turn out to be like we do; So you would assume someone whos name means dove, son of faithfulness would be a man who is gentle and merciful toward others, and faithful to the task God gives him right? Wrong!
Jonah was anything but gentle and merciful, and he was anything but faithful to the task the LORD had given him, even when Gods word so clearly came to him. What we will see in this chapter and really throughout this whole book is Gods ridiculous compassion for a people undeserving.
This book is called Jonah, but its not about Jonah, this prophet is sent to Nineveh, but its not ultimately about the Ninevites, theres a great fish that shows up in this book, but its not about a great fish. This book is about God, and Gods lavish, scandalous, ridiculous compassion to those who do not deserve it. Throughout the book we will see not Jonah, but GOD as the main character who is compassionate to the pagans who have rejected Him, and compassionate to the prophet who has rebelled against Him. Because you see there are 2 ways to run away from God;

By being very, very bad, and acting in contradiction with Gods Word like the Ninevites, or

By being very, very good, in fact too good to agree with Gods Word but according to your own terms like Jonah .

My prayer is that we would choose a third way, that we would repentantly and joyfully accept Gods compassion, throw ourselves upon His mercy and allow Him to have full rule over our lives.

Read Jonah Chapter 1; PRAY

Today in chapter one, we will see and talk about three things; Rebellion, Repercussions and Rescue. A rebellious people, who suffer the Repercussions of their Rebellion, but cry out to God and experience His rescue.

So lets dive in;
THE REBELLION

We have all rebelled against God – Like both the prophet and the pagans we have all rebelled against to God.
Here was Jonahs Responsibility: (read Jonah 1:1-2) Jonah had one job, one task, not 58 different things he had to do, just one. Like he had one task and not badly in the lineage of Israels prophets from which he comes, this wasnt even a hard task. Of all the prophets of God, Jonahs job was by far the easiest, if you compare him with the other prophets, Jonah had it good. Quick Bible study, just so we see that Jonah in comparison was given an easy task. In Isaiah 20:2-3 (Read), God commanded Isaiah to walk around naked from the street to the synagogue for 3 years! And he wasnt a young man eh, he had a wife and grown children!

Mini-Ill: So imagine your dad now imagine your dad walking into this church naked, for 3 years! Ushers I wonder whether youll even know where to begin with that. By Isaiah 49, hes tired and feels as though he prophesied to the wind, but even then his response to God was; here I am, send me.

Prophet Jeremiah had an equally difficult time being a prophet heres what the Lord told him in Jeremiah 16:2 (Read),

Mini-Ill: Can you imagine if Jeremiah was dating someone and he calls her to break up with her? babe its not you, its the LORD! Hes the only guy in human history who could have legitimately get away with that tired line. Jeremiah was not an older man like Isaiah, God called him when he was only about 17 years old, by the time Gods telling him this, hes a young healthy man with young healthy sexual urges and desires,  who had to grow up solo, who had to grow up watching everyone elses wedding except his own, who was invited to everyone elses baby dedication but his own, but even then, He said in Jeremiah 20 God you lied to me!, but right after that he says that the Word of the LORD was like a fire shut up in his bones and he cannot help but prophesy, he didnt ran away, from the task he remained faithful to it.
Prophet Ezekiel didnt have it easy either, in Ezekiel 4 (Read). Ezekiel had to sleep 390days on his right side for the sins of Israel and just when he thought it was over he had to sleep another 40 days on his left side for the sins of Judah while eating food prepared with cow dung (human excrement), but he didnt ran away from it,

Hosea was commanded to marry a prostitute and every day he had to bear the pain of his heart breaking because his wife had found someone more desirable than him, but he stayed the course, he never ran away
Then theres Jonah. This clown was just asked to do one thing, go talk to the people of Nineveh. God said go and Jonah said nope! And you have to ask, maze, are you sure this guy should be standing in the same line as Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Hosea, these great prophets of God? My answer. I dunno bana, maybe he got the wrong memo, coz hes the first and ONLY prophet in the Bible to have ever rebelled against God! The million-dollar question is Why?. Why Jonah? Why would you do this? God gave him a task and Scripture says; (Read Jonah1:3a- but Jonah)
But Jonah  2 of the most unfortunate words in this book: By the way in the Bible when a sentence says; But then followed by a human name? Its usually a bad sign. Adam and Eve knew what God had said, BUT Adam, went and ate the fruit. Moses was supposed to speak to the rock, BUT Moses, arrogantly struck it instead. David knew that Bathsheba was Uriahs wife, BUT David, do you see a pattern here? Its only positive when But is followed by God But God.. Jonah knew full well what the LORD had commanded Him to do, but Jonah fled instead. His hope was to flee from the presence of the LORD.  Now Jonah knew full well he couldnt really ran away from Gods presence, as a good Hebrew boy (a prophet no less), he knew Psalm 139:7 (read*). Jonah knows that God is omnipresent, he knows he cant run away from God, so what does Scripture mean by he rose to flee the presence of God? Jonah was running away from a relational space with God, he was running away from Gods relational presence. The Hebrew word for presence means face, Jonah was trying to ran away from Gods face, put differently, Jonah didnt want God all up in his face. He was running away from a meaningful, intimate relationship with God.
Mini-Illustration: you know how sometimes married couples fight and then one of them leaves the living room and goes to bed, and even when the wife or husband goes to bed he sticks to one side and she sticks to another and theres the great rift valley between them? Mpaka if one persons foot accidentally touches the other they jerk and theyre told; toka hapa wewe na hizo miguu zako! They are not really running away from each others presence, they are still in the same house and same bed, but that space, is representative of them running away from each other in a relational capacity, its them saying I want nothing to do with you right now, dont talk to me, dont touch me, if I could, I would rid myself of you.
Relate: Thats what Jonah is trying to do here. Hes fully aware that God is there and sees everything, but he doesnt want anything to do with Him and the responsibility the LORD has given him. Isnt this what we do ourselves we know God is around us and that one is okay with us but theres some depth of intimacy we want to run away from? Ill: Young ladies beware – You know prayer is not my gift

By his flagrant disobedience and rebellion, Jonah is making some big statements about what he thinks of God and what he thinks of Nineveh. So what is it about Nineveh that Jonah just couldnt stomach? What is it about Nineveh that literally made Jonah 2,500km in the opposite direction?
STATE: It involves who the Ninevites were to the Israelites
Ninevehs wickedness (Read Jonah 1:2)  God talked about the evil of this city that has come up before Him. Like any city, Nineveh was a place of immorality, inequality, impunity and the same issues every city in the world has ever had. People generally dont move into the city to be upright, they move in to get away from rural accountability and live the high life of money, sex and power. Nineveh was a great big city that took 3 days walking to get across the city. So its wickedness was a one reason why a good, upright Hebrew boy like Jonah wouldnt want to go there, but there was bigger reason. Remember how earlier Jonah had prophesied and protected Israel from the Assyrians. The capital city of Assyria was called
Capital city of Assyrias wickedness  Nineveh is where a lot of the policies of the Assyrian empire would be made and supported, both by their leaders as well as their citizens. The Assyrians were a brutal, brutal lot. They were known to tie prisoners of war to horses and drag them for kilometers until whatever city, town, village or country was filled with the blood of their own. They had city gates so wide that you could ride 3 chariots on them. They would regularly assemble thousands of human heads (not skulls) and make a mountain of the heads at the city gate in Nineveh to serve as a warning to what the Ninevites and Assyrians could do to you should anyone be dumb enough to mess with them. They would rape and kill little prepubescent boys and girls, they would skin their enemies alive, and then drape the human skin over the city walls as a warning.

Now do you see why he said no? Jonah had lost his aunts, uncles, friends and families in the most brutal ways to these very Ninevites. Hes the mighty prophet and national hero who protected Israel from these brutal Assyrians, and now hes being sent to the enemy.
Scenario A: The Ninevites repent and become a strong, powerful, prosperous nation, but Good News for Nineveh means Bad News for Israel, because they will likely expand and enslave Israel, and Jonah goes from national hero, to national traitor.
Scenario B: The Ninevites refuse to repent, and given their track-record in mastering the art of torture, what do you think theyll do to Jonah once they reject his message?…now can we empathize with Jonah a bit?
Mini-Illustration: imagine being a Jew in the 1940s and God asks you to go tell the Nazis who raped and killed your mother, placed your father in a gas chamber and experimented on your sister about Jesus. Tell the truth would you go?
Relate: and this is where it all comes together, if you know you would not go, please do me a favour, put your hand in your chest like this and say; I am Jonah, say that with me (pause, fb)
Relate: You are Jonah, I am Jonah. The same way Jonah would rather live in comfort without God, than live radically with Him? I am Jonah, you are Jonah. You see Jonah was faithful to HIMSELF, and when Jonahs life plan started parting direction with Gods plan for Jonah, Jonah chose his life goals as opposed to Gods.
Our definition of rebellion: We usually think to ourselves; ya, I know Im not perfect, but at least Im not a rebel against God! We think to ourselves; at least I go to church, at least I tithe, at least Im in an E-Group, at least Ive done plug-in, at least Im not sleeping around, at least Im not corrupt, based on these things, theres no way Im a rebel against God. But you know what;
Rebellion Biblically Defined is? Simply saying no to God. As long as you say no to God, you are a rebel against God. In the words of J.D. Greear, you are never further away from God than when you are close to Him and you say no. Actually let me make it worse for you1 Samuel 15:23 – Rebellion against him is as bad as witchcraft.
Like Jonah: Jonah was obedient to God in every other respect but one, and like him, many of us read our Bibles, pray every day, are faithful members of this church, and look like youre walking with God except in one seemingly tiny area of our lives. Maybe for you its a;

Relationship  that you know is ungodly, you know youve been living in sin in this relationship, youve tried justifying it, you know God is saying walk away, but you wont quit it. Every other part of your life is fine, but when it comes to this relationship, you wont let Him or anyone else who speaks His Word in love touch this area of your life. Maybe for you its
Money  the Lord has been asking you to be faithful in your giving or support a specific ministry financially that will go towards making disciples and in your heart you know what the Lord is calling you to do, but you say; no! I need that money for my kids (as though God cant provide), I need that money for security (as though God cant protect), I need that money, no! Maybe its your
Time  the Lord has been calling you to give more of your time to serve others in church or in your E-Group, or to start and E-Group or join a ministry of the church, and you just do not want to sacrifice your time. Perhaps its an even bigger
Sacrifice  for some of you God may be asking you to leave the comfort and security of this city and like Jonah move to a difficult, uncomfortable part of Kenya, Africa or the World to make disciples in that area. Maybe for you Hes asking you to do that not as a full time missionary, though there are certainly some Hes calling to do that, but Hes asking you to go as doctor, teacher, engineer, architect, musician to a people who do not know Him and call them to repent and believe in Christ.

Will your heart and soul say yes? Or will you say no like Jonah? Jonah is a guy who is faithful in every area of his life but there is one where he says no to God.
CS: So as Jonah is fleeing the presence of the Lord and his task to go to Nineveh (Read Jonah 1:3b)
Rebellion will take you down

Jonah went down  it is a picture of the rebellious prophets spiritual life shutting down. Look at the word play coz literary masterpiece, so shout out the word down every time you see it, ok? Here we go; (read the downs). Hes going further and further away from God with every step.
Down to sleep  he couldnt care less what happens to the people above deck, he wanted to do his own thing. This is not just any sleep the word used here is the same word used when it says god put Adam to sleep, its a deep sleep that resembles death. The picture God is painting for us here is that of a man who is slowly heading toward spiritual coma as he gives in to the subtle waves of sin and disobedience. The people upstairs in the ship are crying out for God, THEY have to wake him up to pray to his God, something he should have already been doing without being asked. But Jonahs heart had become cold, both toward God and men. The subtle, often unseen waves of disobedience and rebellion had swept him away into a deep spiritual sleep.
The Gospel group Casting Crowns puts it this way; Its a slow fade, when you give yourself away, its a slow fade, when black and white turns to grey and thoughts invade, choices are made, a price will be paid when you give yourself away.

The enemy is ready for your rebellion

Down to a ship that was ready  there was a ship ready to take Jonah away from God and away from Gods call on his life.

Relate: Heres a massive lesson from the life of Jonah; “if you want to ran away from God, there is always a ship ready to take you to Tarshish.”. If youre a married man, theres always some girl who will respond to your flirting with her even though she knows youre married. If youre a married woman, theres always some man whos too good to be true, who says and does all the things your husband wont and hes ready to sweep you off your feet, in complete disregard of your husband as you explore your feelings with him. If you and I are greedy, there will always be a great deal on something we absolutely have to buy. If you dont want to go out evangelizing, theres always another commitment more important than bringing people to the Lord. If you want to reject Gods rule over your body, theres always some good reason to sidestep Scripture.
Illustrate: You know how we dare God in our prayersyou tell God, Haki if you dont want me to fall into the sin of fornication dont allow those cheeks to pass before my face. Maybe your struggle is alcohol, you tell him please if you dont want me to fall dont allow so and so to call me today because its Friday.i kid you notthey will call you.
Dont you think you have an enemy who WANTS to aide you in your disobedience. Dont you think you have an enemy whos Job Description, his entire J.D. is to ready the ship for your disobedience? And when I say that, youll usually respond to me saying; Ya, I know this relationship is not biblical, but I just have a peace about it. When people say that I literally have to hold my hands together like this tightly, just so that I dont give them a Nigerian who is yua fada slap. Wacha these East African slaps of ours, this is a proper slap as you ask them who is yua Fada?! Because in essence what they are saying when they do that is that God wants this for everyone else, but for you, just you, He has given you peace to disobey Him. In Genesis 3 when Eve was about to eat the fruit and Satan says; you will not surely die, you will become like God., you know what hes doing? Hes giving her peace about disobeying God! Your enemies whole J.D. is to give you peace about disobeying God.
Peace is not the mark of whether or not we should do something. Gods Word is!

This is the rock, regardless of how we feel, what peace we have or do not have, THIS is the rock we stand on to know what Gods will is, and then to obey that will.
c). Rebellion will cost you

Jonah 1:3b.He paid his fare and went aboard with the crew to sail to Spain, where he would be away from the LORD”.(GNT)

God only funds his missions He doesnt fund rebellion. You are on your own my guy

APPLICATION:

So as we close, I just want to ask one question;

Will you say yes?
Salvation  maybe you are like the pagan and you need to repent and believe, give your whole life over, youve sense God tug at youwill you say yes?

September Series #ShapedForService Topic: What Can I do? ~ Pst Ezekiel

A cartoon showed a picture of a woman lying in her sick bed, obviously in misery. In the sink were stacked piles of dirty dishes. A huge basket of clothes to be ironed sat nearby. Two dirty children were fighting in one corner, and in the other a cat sat licking spilled milk. A smiling woman stood in the doorway and the caption had her saying, Well, Florence, if there is anything I can do to help, dont hesitate to let me know.

What a picture of the local church! Pastors and church staff are overwhelmed with work. More needy people cry out for their attention than they have time for. Sunday school and other youth programs lack workers. Visitors need a personal call. New people need someone to befriend them. The missions program needs dedicated workers. Facilities need maintenance and improvements. Even some who are involved seem to be committed only when its convenient. And yet people often say, If theres anything I can do to help, let me know!

Really?! Yes there is something you can do. You are saying, Pastor Im willing serve in Church but I truly dont know what exactly I should do. My answer to you is; what are your spiritual gifts?

We have been going through a sermon series titled Shaped for service and we have been asking, what is your shape for service? Where S  Spiritual gifts, H- Heart desire, A  Abilities, P  Personality, E  Experiences

Your ministry will be most effective and fulfilling when you are using your gifts and abilities in the area of your hearts desire in a way that best expresses your personality and experience  Rick Warren.

If you are a believer, there are spiritual gifts that the Holy Spirit deposited in you the moment you received Christ. Ephesians 1:13 – And you also became God’s people when you heard the true message, the Good News that brought you salvation. You believed in Christ, and God put his stamp of ownership on you by giving you the Holy Spirit he had promised. (GNT)

John 14:23 – Jesus answered and said to him, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him. (NKJV)

The bible names 19 Spiritual gifts in total; and it groups them in three categories.

Gifts of the father  Gifts given by the father – Romans 12:6-8 – In his grace, God has given us different gifts for doing certain things well. So if God has given you the ability to prophesy, speak out with as much faith as God has given you. 7. if your gift is serving others, serve them well. If you are a teacher, teach well. 8. if your gift is to encourage others, be encouraging. If it is giving, give generously. If God has given you leadership ability, take the responsibility seriously. And if you have a gift for showing kindness to others, do it gladly.(NLT)

Gifts of the son  Given by Jesus Christ – Ephesians 4:11 – Now these are the gifts Christ gave to the church: the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, and the pastors and teachers.(NLT)  Fivefold ministries

Gifts of the Holy Spirit  Given by the Holy Spirit – 1 Corinthians 12:8-10 – 8. For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; 9. to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, 10.  and to another the effecting of miracles, and to another prophecy, and to another the distinguishing of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, (Heavenly tongues and tongues of men) and to another the interpretation of tongues.(NASB)

Five Truths about Spiritual Gifts

God does not want us to be ignorant about Spiritual gifts  vs1

There are different kinds of gifts but all are given by the same spirit  vs4, 5

They are given to every man  every believer for the common good of all (body of Christ); not selfish gains  vs7, 11

Given God gives gifts according to His will  vs11

God allows us to covet/desire gifts  31

There are some gifts that are repeated in every category: I.e. Prophecy and Teaching. Perhaps this is to emphasise on the importance of the two in the body of Christ. 1 Cor 14:3

There are some gifts that are interrelated, if you have one, there is a big probability that you have the rest in that cluster

2 Timothy 1:6 – This is why I remind you to fan into flames the spiritual gift God gave you when I laid my hands on you.(NLT)

Take Home

Note: In the take away inventory, Healing, Interpretation, Miracles, and Tongues are not included in the Spiritual Gift Assessment because their presence in the life of a believer is generally self-evident.

September Sermon Series; #ShapedForService ~ Dr Monica

The church is inside you….every sunday we go to meet with other believers

What does it mean to be shaped for service?

            *Being Christlike

-We are being shaped to be more like Christ

-Being Christ-like means having Christ in you

Ephesians 1:17

-Having the spirit of wisdom and revelation(knowledge of Him)

             1; Knowing God’s word

-You can only worship what you know..know the word

-Do you spend time in God’s word?

-If you dont know the God you serve, you will have shallow service

-The only place we can boast is in knowing God’s word…all things perish..you cant boast of the things of this world

-The word searches your thoughts…if it’s in your heart…it will speak to your mind

-You can only serve a God you know

*When you pray, pray according to God’s word not your own selfish desires

We should have the hunger and thirst for Gods word so as to be of service

2:Worship Him in truth and in spirit

Collossians 1:9-10

-The spirit and the body wrestles…so your only enemy is yourself….the devil will use your body

-Allow God’s Spirit to work on your spirit

-Christ should be the one guiding and modelling your life, this helps you to be at rest and peace

*John 4:24….God is Spirit and He should be worshipped in truth and in Spirit

-Don’t use your senses and feelings to worship God…allow the HolySpirit to teach you to worship Him in spirit and in truth

-The minute you know about God…you will itch to serve Him

-No more do we wait to worship in the temple or sunday….we are shaped for service each day..

-Let us spend time in Gods word so that we may be strong and pure Psalms119

#ShapedForService

September Sermon series ; #ShapedForService ~ Pst Ezekiel

Some very important questions to ask ourselves; Why were you made, What is the purpose of life, for what reason are you alive and breathing today?

You can come up with so many justifiable and right answers but I will tell you the most simple and the bottom line is, you were made to serve, period.

From now on, any definition of a successful life must include serving others. –George Bush

“At the end of life we will not be judged by how many diplomas we have received, how much money we have made, how many great things we have done. We will be judged by “I was hungry, and you gave me something to eat, I was naked and you clothed me. I was homeless, and you took me in.”  ― Mother Teresa

KJV Dictionary in summary defines the word serve as work done for other people or for God and worship of God.

We are commanded to serve God. Jesus was unmistakable: Matthew 20:28 Your attitude must be like my own, for even I the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give my life as a ransom for many.”

For us as Christians, service is not something to be tacked onto our schedules if we can spare the time. It is the heart of the Christian life. Jesus came “to serve” and “to give”—and those two verbs should define your life on earth, too. ‘Serving’ and ‘giving’ sum up God’s purpose for your life.

Jesus taught that spiritual maturity is never an end in itself. Maturity is for ministry! We grow up in order to give out. It is not enough to keep learning more and more. We must act on what we know and practice what we claim to believe. Impression without expression causes depression. Study without service leads to spiritual stagnation.

The old comparison between the Sea of Galilee and the Dead Sea is still true. Galilee is a lake full of life because it takes in water but also gives it out. In contrast, nothing lives in the Dead Sea because, with no outflow, the lake has stagnated.

The last thing you need as a believer is to go to another Bible study. You already know far more than you are putting into practice. What you need are serving experiences in which you can exercise your spiritual muscles.

Serving is the opposite of our natural inclination. Most of the time we’re more interested in “serve us” than service. We say, “I’m looking for a church that meets my needs and blesses me,” not “I’m looking for a place to serve and be a blessing.” We expect others to serve us, not vice versa.

Martin Luther King Jr once said, the first question which the priest and the Levite asked was: “If I stop to help this man, what will happen to me?” But the good Samaritan reversed the question: “If I do not stop to help this man, what will happen to him?

Sometimes even when we give ourselves to serve, behind it there is a selfish motive; it’s about the benefits I’ll get from serving. Have you heard about this big, burly man who visited the pastor’s home and asked to see the minister’s wife, a woman well known for her charitable impulses? “Madam,” he said in a broken voice, “I wish to draw your attention to the terrible plight of a poor family in this district. The father is dead, the mother is too ill to work, and the nine children are starving. They are about to be turned into the cold, empty streets unless someone pays their rent, which amounts to $400.” “How terrible!” exclaimed the preacher’s wife. “May I ask who you are?” The sympathetic visitor applied his handkerchief to his eyes. “I’m the landlord,” he sobbed.

But as we mature in Christ, the focus of our lives should increasingly shift to living a life of service. The mature follower of Jesus stops asking, “Who’s going to meet my needs?” and starts asking, “Whose needs can I meet?”

Every service we are involved in as Christians is service unto God. Colossians 3:23 – Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as though you were working for the Lord and not for people.

And so when we talk about shaped for service, we are talking about having been shaped to serve God.

Let me pause and ask you. Who are you serving?

Serving is a personal choice that we are all required to make; if we say yes to serve Him, there is a condition; He becomes your master and He doesn’t accept number two.

Serving God is not emotional – feelings- but committal – commitment

When you say yes, God gives you blank terms and conditions contract to sign your acceptance to abide by the terms and conditions and then whatever He adds into the list He expects you to abide with.

Some of the terms and conditions include;

1.Holiness

Holiness is essential friends if we are going to serve God. God is not desperate for your service; He is desperate for your obedience towards holiness.

Remember the terms and conditions we spoke about, one of them is that; “If you abide by my terms i will abide by mine”. He is willing to abide with anyone who is ready to abide with His terms.

God is not a respecter of persons – any man. He is not marvelled by your skill, your voice, creativity.

His terms and conditions of service have to be fully adhered to.

The Lord says ,’Be holy for I am Holy’

We are living in a wicked generation but God calls upon us to be holy which is possible. Titus 2:11

Hebrews 12:14 – Work at living in peace with everyone, and work at living a holy life, for those who are not holy will not see the Lord.(NLT)

2.Willingness

Friends, service begins with willingness – it doesn’t begin with skill or mastering. Are you willing?

3.Depend on God for Help

Be holy, be willing and depend on God

July Sermon Series; Hangout – Topic: Fellowship (By Pastor Moses Chessa)

Hebrews 10:24-25

And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds.Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another–and all the more as you see the Day approaching.

*Fellowships are ncessary for encouragement

1.Fellowships should enhance life

Psalms 133:1 How good and pleasant it is when brothers live together in unity!

*Fellowship enhances accountability

2.Fellowship enhances a great oportunity for worship

*Adoration and worship makes God happy

*When you give God what  He loves…He shares His heart with you..He gives you what you want

*Worship should be true and authentic

we should be fast to accomodate others…

3.Fellowship gives you an alternative family

*Fellowship should give you a godly identity

*Fellowship is not an event..its part of your life

Note – What practical steps have you taken to build fellowship?

July Sermon series:Hang Out (fellowship)-Topic:Three men in church (By Pastor Ezekiel)

Main Text; Acts 4:32 to 5:10

Story of Annaniah and Saphira

The three kinds of men in church

1 cor 1 , 2 and 3

*Am i a stambling block or a vital organ in church

a)Natural man..non believer

b)canal man..wordly man

c)spiritual man..discerning

In every man theres the spirit, soul and body

The soul..emotions ,will, mind

The spirit..the image of God that dwells in us

The body and the spirit dictates what happens in the soul

For the body to survive it must get from the world..where it came from

From where one is created..one must remain attached to survive

The spirit is God’s image and for it to remain alive..it must remain attached to God

1:NATURAL MAN

1 Cor 2:14 to 3:3

a non christian/non believer

He’s spiritually separated from God and can not please God

He is only influenced by the world in all he does

He’s dominated with sinful nature

*We may appear respectable from the outside but our spirits are dead

 2:CANAL/WORLDLY CHRISTIAN

Allow the body to control them

He is defiled by the world

They have been born again…the spirit is alive but then he is much influenced by the world  and satan..

Immature…still babies spiritually

Galatians 5:16-17

Are you too close to where you got in?

3:SPIRITUAL MAN

1 Cor2:15

Gal 2:20

Applies what the Lord has said

He has fed the spirit and the body has no place for worldy influence
